The focus during the last month has been to talk to landowners about signing the wayleave agreement which needs to be in place before any duct can be laid. So far, almost all those in Old Hutton whose land the route crosses have been visited and have signed. Similarly, one third have signed in Preston Patrick, and visits to owners in New Hutton have started.
Preparations for installation of the network have begun. The concrete base of the electronics cabinet to be sited behind Old Hutton Public Hall will be constructed at the start of September. Duct is also being laid at four sites where there is building work. Laying duct across fields which will be ploughed and seeded with grass or cereal is a priority because work cannot be done after seeding, possibly causing a year’s delay. Consequently, we are expecting to lay duct in these fields during the week starting 22nd August. Volunteers are needed to help with all duct-laying work so an email appeal will be made a day or two before.
Currently, all signals passing through the B4RN network, which operates in 40+ parishes in Lancashire and Yorkshire, enter the national broadband network at Arkholme and Quernmore. B4RN have announced that they intend to establish a third access point in New Hutton near the Hayclose Lane/A684 junction. The signals will be controlled by the electronics cabinet to be sited in New Hutton. This is important for our network because it will increase its resilience which means it will be more robust if a breakage occurs in the line somewhere, something which is likely to happen during its lifetime of a hundred years.
The next Steering Group meeting will discuss the holding of a public meeting in each parish to discuss the organisation of groups of volunteers in each hamlet and the tasks they will need to do to extend the broadband network from the spur or trunk line on the edge of their hamlet to their houses. Please look out for an email about these meetings which will be sent at about the start of September.
If you have any questions, or want to know who to get in touch with in your parish, please see our contact details.
