Up to 03-10-2016 we installed 4.8Km (3.0 miles) of duct across fields in Old Hutton and Preston Patrick which were to be ploughed. If we had not met this target, there would have been a delay of a year until the crops had been harvested. Since then, most of the trunk route to Millness has been laid. We are concentrating on laying duct for the trunk lines as links between electronics cabinets must become live before spurs branching from the trunks can be live.
The network has been designed to link hamlets so we now know the locations of the chambers from which houses in hamlets will be served. We do not yet know the exact routes across gardens and the points at which service lines will go into houses. With almost 500 houses and businesses in the three parishes, we need local champions to lead and co-ordinate this part of the project. Local champions are needed for every hamlet which will be the one they live in so they will be working with their neighbours rather than strangers. There can be one or more champion for each hamlet. Their role is to get the ducts into each house and business that wants it from the chamber next to the hamlet. In detail they will need to:
- Confirm that we have listed all houses and business premises
- Check their names and locations on maps
- Check what the owner wants
- Discuss with local people and decide the exact routes for service lines from the chamber to houses
- Get wayleaves if necessary
- Arrange digging parties for service ducts through gardens
- Record the routes on maps for future reference
At the three parish meetings we had volunteers for most of the 31 hamlets. A meeting for local champions is being held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 2nd November at New Hutton Institute to discuss their role in more detail and to distribute the information they will need. In the following weeks they will be visiting all houses in their hamlets. If you can help them with the tasks, please do so. Installation of duct across gardens to houses can proceed before the trunk network is installed to hamlets.
We have become aware that some residents are not receiving the emails asking for volunteers to help form work-parties. Our list for these emails originates from those who said on their expression of interest that they would like to volunteer. It might be that some have now changed their mind and want to volunteer. To clarify the volunteers list we are going to email everyone assuming they are volunteers. The email will describe how people can unsubscribe if they do not want to volunteer and there will be a simple button to press to do so. However, please remember that this is a community project and without sufficient volunteers it will take a long time to build.
Expressions of interest in connecting to the network have continued to be received. We now have 298 which is 62.0% of all homes and businesses. We are also grateful to receive more investment. The total has reached £313,650. The latest estimate of the cost of the whole project is £349,000 so we are pleased that we are nearing this figure and hope that residents will provide further investments.
